As a late conclusion to my series of works from last term, here’s a teaser poster of my thesis project: A 2d animation short.

Starting this new term, I’ll be busy working on this. I’m very nervous ‘cos I want it to look good, scared ‘cos I’ll be working on my own, excited ‘cos I’m a masochist but very thankful ‘cos I get to do what I want to do as a final project.

I’ll be recording the blood and sweat of production on my sketchblog. There’s already a piece of character study there. Go on now. Giddiyap.

My finals for video production 2 class:
The high standards of a poetry professor kept him from appreciating the mediocrity of his students’ efforts. Until he discovers a diamond amongst the rocks.

This had me tearing out my hair because of the casting problems for the lead role. Despite the struggle though, my prof gave it one of the highest grades in the class. Like what I said before in about concept photography, directing live action films ain’t in my list of aspirations but facing this challenge and pushing myself widened my potential.

Dollhouse

One of my midterms for the same class: A girl wakes up in a strange place full of strange inmates.

My prompt for the design is that the government back in a futuristic 1950’s distributed these virtual info booths to warn people about a possible zombie plague. The government and media using fear and subliminal messages  to control the masses but the blood splatter on the screen could tell a different irony.

The project is in .exe format but due to size and some copyrighted music and videos, I can’t simply distribute it. I can share some screenshots though.

There’s just not enough cereal for everyone.

This is cherished as my last animation featuring cartoon versions of my Crimson Skies characters.

3DANIM3 class:

My midterm project for that class. I wish I could show my finals but there are still unfinished details.

My 9th term has come to its end, prompting me to reflect on how it went. In one word: Ambitious. I wanted this term to be better than the last which was a draggy and uninspired one. Although this term was not less challenging since I had to animate, film, design, code and research – The first 2 being the most work heavy.

Some projects fell short from how I envisioned them but I knew what I wanted to make. Now, I have a lot to share. Collecting the works that highlight my pass 4 months in one post will be too confusing. There will be a series of post for them as I upload the corresponding media along.

Looking at those highschool students so full of curiosity and amazement at what could lie ahead for their careers, intently observing if this college full of talent… Makes me remember how much I was excited to start art college. A stage where I will be able hone my skills and meet opportunities. Yet both my highschool self and the batch that visited us were oblivious to the screams of agony over projects and deadlines.

I used to tell myself that college won’t be as optimistic as I first thought. Even though I had no idea, I told myself to be prepared for stress. Right now when I’m readying my thesis proposal, in the middle of majors, being deprived of sleep and comfort of mind… My insides scream to give my tortured soul a break. That stress is a bigger demon than I’d imagine. There’s a part of me from highschool that’s keeps on reminding me of my mantra: No matter how much I will agonize, I signed up for this. I wanna tell that part “Screw you!”… But that’s just the lack of sleep that’s talking.

It was a small reward of pride when my prof indirectly said I was one of the best students. My prof’s compliment encouraged me to keep on accepting challenges and maintaining my standards. Despite all the agony I signed up for, I should be able to prove my competence. It’s a relief to finish everything that needs to be done, but a reward to make all the struggle worth it.

I’m glad this is over. Although I’m not pursuing professional photography, it won’t hurt to be able to take better photos. I’m mostly an illustrator but I learned a lot about light and composition which are elements shared in any form of visual art.

I wanted to work with a deeper concept but I couldn’t translate whatever I had in mind into a composition. I went for a failsafe idea which I planned early on incase it had come to this. The deadline was getting nearer and I had other homework.

I’m still happy with how this illustration turned out anyway. It’s a simple idea inspired by colors and fashion style. Nice excuse to draw girls in funky outfits – my guilty pleasure.

Here are some process pics

Since they share the same body structure with a few variations, I drew the basic body structure first then the variations on a different paper. I assembled their initial pose in Photoshop then sketched their clothes on.

Exported the sketch to Illustrator and worked on the lineart. This involves arranging the layers for the intertwined arms.

Switched the white with a color from the swatches and remove the black outline.

Added the gradients, shading and textures.

Then a simple background! Bam! Done!
