Birthday Cake

A little late but here’s my birthday cake! Made with love, markers and marker-sniffing induced imagination. But mostly love…

Actually I just wanted to draw a cake with crazy layers. My birthday last March 11 seemed like a good excuse to start one. Couldn’t finished the whole thing in time though.

I’m 19 years old now. Crap.

Monsters Under the Bed

Meant for Halloween but but that is how much time and brain power I didn’t have this term… So Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Activity time! Some of the monsters aren’t mine. Enumerate them along with where they came from or who owns them. It will save me from writing a long list of credits. Go.

Not much to say about the theme of this illustration. This started from a doodle of those geometric trees. Then it ended up with me experimenting/abusing the scatter and spacing brush options.

At some point, I got tired of seeing it when all I had left was to finish the deer and to texture the columns. My family wanted something a little less weird from me so I thought I should finish this.

The size ratio is meant to be printed in 3 letter-sized prints… Or a really long paper.

My contribution for Horizons – my college’s publication for illustrations. This year’s theme is opposites.

I wanted to work with a deeper concept but I couldn’t translate whatever I had in mind into a composition. I went for a failsafe idea which I planned early on incase it had come to this. The deadline was getting nearer and I had other homework.

I’m still happy with how this illustration turned out anyway. It’s a simple idea inspired by colors and fashion style. Nice excuse to draw girls in funky outfits – my guilty pleasure.

Here are some process pics

Since they share the same body structure with a few variations, I drew the basic body structure first then the variations on a different paper. I assembled their initial pose in Photoshop then sketched their clothes on.

Exported the sketch to Illustrator and worked on the lineart. This involves arranging the layers for the intertwined arms.

Switched the white with a color from the swatches and remove the black outline.

Added the gradients, shading and textures.

Then a simple background! Bam! Done!
